While we are busy teaching children toward academic standards, they are busy becoming human beings, constructing identities and relationships within the daily life of the classroom. The moment-to-moment decisions we make as teachers influence the ways we organize classroom life and the language of the classroom. which have a powerful influence on what children learn and who they become. Fortunately, teaching toward social and emotional well-being is also the foundation for accelerating intellectual development. Building caring, dialogic communities of competent, fully engaged learners with a sense of autonomy is the essence of equitable literacy teaching.

Peter Johnston is Professor Emeritus at the University at Albany. His research explores relationships among children’s engagement, their literate, social and emotional development, and classroom talk. Recognition for his research includes the Albert J. Harris Award from the International Literacy Association, the State University of New York Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Research, the Literacy Research Association’s Oscar Causey Award for outstanding contributions to research and the P. David Pearson Scholarly Influence Award.

Recent books include: Engaging Literate Minds: Developing children's social emotional and intellectual lives, Teens choosing to read: Fostering social, emotional and intellectual growth through books, and a second edition of Choice Words: How our language affects children's learning. 
Kathryn Champeau is a reading specialist/consultant with over 40 years of experience, a former UW-Milwaukee adjunct instructor teaching classes on how to serve the children we find hardest to teach, and a past president of the Wisconsin State Reading Association (WSRA). She currently serves as the WSRA’s Legislative Committee Chair collaborating with others on local, state, and national literacy advocacy issues. As a literacy consultant, Kathy works side-by-side with classroom teachers supporting their understanding of dialogic and constructivist approaches to learning. Kathy has co-authored a book with Dr. Peter Johnston, Engaging Literate Minds, which chronicles the results of this work. This book received the Literacy Research Association’s 2021 Literacy B. Fry Honorary Mention. Kathy has presented at international, national, state, and local conferences.
